Banco Español de Algas

The Spanish Bank of Algae (BEA) is a research, development and innovation service of the Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (ULPGC), and it is managed by the ULPGC's Canarian Foundation-Scientific and Technological Park (Fundación Canaria Parque Científico Tecnológico - FCPCT). The BEA has been a member of the European Culture Collections' Organisation (ECCO) since 2001, and of the World Federation for Culture Collections (WFCC) since 2003. It is included in the World Data Centre for Microorganisms (WFCC-MIRCEN), with registration number 837.

The BEA is accredited by the Government of Spain as an international authority for the deposit of microorganisms, in accordance with World Intellectual Property Organization's Budapest Treaty Notification No. 239 on the International Recognition of the Deposit of Microorganisms, dated October 28th, 2005. This accreditation confers the BEA the function of deposit of microalgae and cyanobacteria for the purpose of recognition of intellectual property before the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Spanish Patent and Trademark Office (SPTO).

The BEA actively collaborates in the pan-European platforms: Euroepan Microbial Resource Infrastructure (MIRRI) and European Marine Biological Resource Center (EMBRC) through the Spanish node, EMBREedES.

The BEA is committed to economic development in the area of marine biotechnology and is a member of the Spanish Association of Bioenterprises (ASEBIO) and of the Blue Biotechnology and Aquaculture Platform BIOASIS which aims to promote this sector in Gran Canaria.

MISSION

The BEA's mission is to offer services such as bioprospecting, isolation, identification, characterization, maintenance and culture of microalgae and cyanobacteria; as well as to offer training and counselling services in the area of microalgal biotechnology. It also develops programs for the cultivation of microalgae and cyanobacteria and carries out the assessment of biomass under different public and private research projects related to microalgal biotechnology. All activities are developed under a framework of sustainable exploitation of the biodiversity of microalgae and cyanobacteria, and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits (ABS) derived from the genetic resources of States, in accordance with the Nagoya Protocol and the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

FACILITIES

The BEA has fully-equipped laboratories (microscopes, flow cytometers, centrifuges, flow chambers, fluorimeters, water equipment, etc.) and activation chambers. It also has a culture plant and greenhouse of about 300 square meters fitted with culture systems such as tanks and methacrylate photobioreactors of different volumes (50-400L) for the culture of freshwater microalgae as well as raceways-type culture tanks of fixed structures: three 8-square meter long raceways and two 30-square meter long raceways. It also has movable units of macroalgae culture fiber and polycarbonate tanks (750 - 1500 l).
